Dec 1/10 - Pt 3: Condoms in Porn Debate

Last month, an American porn actor was diagnosed with HIV. The news set the industry on edge. But it still says there's no need to start mandating the use of condoms.

PART THREE

Condoms in Porn Debate - Diane Duke

It isn't subtle acting. Nor does it promise Shakespearean calibre performances. But pornography is all over the internet, cable and pay-per-view TV.

*** We should warn you -- in case you haven't already guessed -- we're talking about the pornography industry this morning. And - a warning - some of the discussion will likely be graphic. ***

(We aired a clip from a porn scene)

Well, we can figure out what comes next. But what is particularly upsetting to some, is that what does happen next typically does not involve a condom. That has been an on-going source of controversy in Los Angeles, the capital of North America's multi-Billion-dollar adult film industry. And the debate has been re-ignited ... after a porn actor known as Patient Zeta tested positive for HIV in October.

The scare follows another scare from last year, when an actor known as Patient Zero also tested HIV positive. The porn industry maintains that both actors contracted HIV off set. And the virus was not passed on to any other actors. But critics question how the industry can be so certain. And it has sparked renewed calls for mandatory condom-use.

Nina Hartley -- a 26-year-veteran of the porn industry who is still performing at age 51 -- thinks that is a terrible idea. We aired a clip.

For her thoughts on this debate, we were joined by Diane Duke. She's the Executive Director of the Free Speech Coalition, the porn industry's main advocacy and lobbying group. She was in Canoga Park, California.

Michael Weinstein is the President of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. It is leading the charge to get the California government to enforce mandatory condom use in the pron industry. He was in Hollywood.

Condoms in Porn Debate - Scott Rhodes

The North American porn industry is centered in Los Angeles. But there's a Canadian industry too. Scott Rhodes is a Canadian porn producer and actor. He works with his wife -- who is known as Maxine X. He was in Windsor, Ontario.
