RCMP Commissioner - William Elliott
We started this segment with a clip from RCMP Commissioner William Elliott, in December of 2007. He was responding to a scathing task force report that called the RCMP "horribly broken" and laid out a series of steps needed to fix the force.
Commissioner Elliott was supposed to play a key role in making those changes happen. Instead, he has spent much of the last three years fighting to keep his job. William Elliott is the first civilian to head the RCMP. He has been accused of being high-handed, confrontational ... even a bully.
Last summer, he faced down an unprecedented revolt from within the ranks in which at least 7 members of the RCMP's high command broke rank and went to the Prime Minister's office with complaints about Commissioner Elliott's leadership.
This comes on top of the lingering fallout from the Braidwood Inquiry into the death of Robert Dziekanski, one of the darkest moments in RCMP history. But today, Commissioner Elliott believes he is finally in a position to overhaul the national force. RCMP Commissioner William Elliott was in Ottawa.
