Sept 21/10 - Pt 1: NDP Leader Jack Layton

We talk to NDP Leader Jack Layton, about the up-coming session of Parliament, living with prostate cancer and finding himself at the centre of the debate over the federal long-gun registry.

PART ONE

It's Tuesday, September 21st.

Michael Ignatieff says he may try to scrap the Conservative government's 16 billion dollar plan for a fighter jet program.

Currently, Ignatieff will reconsider if the government agrees to register the fighter jets' long guns.

This is The Current.

NDP Leader - Jack Layton

We started this segment with a clip from Stephen Harper talking about abolishing the long-gun registry. They may be talking everything from the economy to health in the developing world but it is the long-gun registry that is in every party's sights as MP's return to the House of Commons today.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has made his wish to scrap the registry very clear. Across the aisle, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff has ordered his MP's to vote to preserve the registry.

Neither the Conservatives nor the Liberals have enough MP's to get their way on their own for tomorrow's vote. And that leaves the fate of the long-gun registry in the hands of federal NDP leader, Jack Layton. Even though he hasn't ordered his MP's to toe the party line, he says he has enough votes to save the registry. We reached Jack Layton in Ottawa.

In case you missed it, we spoke with Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff earlier this month. Listen here. We have requested an interview with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
