Afghanistan - Darrow McIntyre

In a small town in Afghanistan's Kandahar province, Taliban fighters used to walk around openly ... armed and ready to fire at any NATO soldiers who ventured into the area. It was well-known as a major source of improvised explosive devices and well-known as a safe haven for insurgents as they moved in and out of Kandahar City.

But earlier this year, things started to change. The CBC's Darrow McIntyre and cameraman Marc Robichaud recently spent several days in the area, living and patrolling with the Canadian soldiers of Delta Company. Darrow was in Halifax.

And in the days ahead on The National on CBC Television, Darrow will have more on the counterinsurgency in Khandahar province.

PART TWO

What Disturbs Our Blood

Every family has its secrets ... stories from the past that people just don't like to talk about. Most people are pretty happy to leave them buried. But not James Fitzgerald. He comes from a family with deep roots in Toronto. His grandfather was a brilliant doctor and a pioneer in Canadian public health, who founded the world-famous Connaught Laboratories.

But the Fitzgerald family tree has a dark side as well. James Fitzgerald decided to shine a light on some of those branches. The result is a new book. It's called What Disturbs Our Blood: A Son's Quest to Redeem the Past. James Fitzgerald was in our Toronto studio.
