The Current for January 9, 2008

Satire

It's Wednesday, January 9th. France's president, Nicolas Sarkozy, confirmed yesterday that he intends to marry girlfriend and former model Carla Bruni.

Currently, the French can't wait to see what his mistress will look like.

This is The Current.

2008 New Hampshire Primary

It was a race that had it all: there were comebacks, setbacks, and a good all around squeaker to the end.

There was a frenzy of speculation going into the presidential primary; high stakes and big predictions, not all of them accurate.

Despite polls that had Senator Barack Obama way out ahead of Senator Hillary Clinton prior to voting -- in the end Clinton came out on top -- winning the New Hampshire primary for the Democrats with 40 per cent support.

The other big story last night was John McCain. He won the New Hampshire primary for the Republicans. After the results were in, he was greeted by a loud, rowdy crowd of supporters.

To discuss the significance of what happened last night, we were joined by CBC news correspondent Jennifer Westaway, who spoke to us from New Hampshire.

Obama Profile

Hillary Clinton's New Hampshire win was a stunning one. Heading into the vote, pundits were speculating that Barack Obama had the momentum and pollsters said he had the numbers. But for hours that night, the race between Senator Obama and Senator Clinton was too close to call. And when the results came in, Hillary Clinton came out on top.

Did this second place finish for Democrat Barack Obama suggest he already lost that momentum that had everyone talking, or is the "Obama factor" still in play?

To get a sense of who he is both politically and personally, and what that may say about the future of the Democratic race, we were joined by three people: from Evanston, Illinois, Bob Hercules, a filmmaker who traveled with Senator Obama to his ancestral homeland of Kenya to make the documentary, Senator Obama Goes to Africa; and Linda Feldman, a reporter with the Christian Science Monitor who spoke to us from New Hampshire.

Diet For a Hungry Planet - Rice in India

There's been a lot of attention paid to corn lately: its use in ethanol; concerns about shortages; and the effect its soaring price has had on countries that depend on it as a food staple. But for much of the world, the production of rice is every bit as crucial and comes with just as many worries and concerns. As part of our ongoing series Diet for a Hungry Planet, we've been focusing on India this week. And The Current Senior Producer Alison Broddle joined us with a report about rice.

Michael Pollan - In Defense of Food

"Eat food. Mostly plants. Not too much." As manifestos go, it's hardly "Workers of the world unite!" But for Michael Pollan, that little piece of grandmotherly wisdom is a long overdue counter-revolutionary rallying cry for reclaiming how we eat. In his last book, The Omnivore's Dilemma, Michael Pollan looked at how we procure and prepare the food we eat. His new book is called In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto. It's an indictment of nutritionists, food scientists and what some people call the food industrial complex. Michael Pollan joined us from New York City to talk about it.
