Wi-LAN files patent litigation against RIM, Motorola

Last Updated: Friday, June 20, 2008 | 9:19 AM ET

Ottawa-based intellectual property holder Wi-LAN Inc. has filed patent infringement litigation in Texas against BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion Ltd. and U.S. mobile-device giant Motorola Inc.

Wi-LAN, which is also suing network and switching equipment maker UTStarCom Inc., claims the companies have infringed on two U.S. patents related to mobile hand-held devices.

Founded in Calgary in 1992, Wi-LAN started as a designer and marketer of broadband wireless technologies before moving to Ottawa in 2006 and focusing exclusively on licensing intellectual property.

The company said it has a portfolio of more than 280 issued or pending patents.

In November, the company launched two legal actions against 22 major companies over patents related to wireless fidelity — or Wi-Fi — and to power consumption in digital subscriber line (DSL) products.

The companies listed including Apple Inc., Dell Inc., Hewlett-Packard, Intel Corp., Sony Corp., and retail chains such as Best Buy Co. Inc. and Circuit City Stores Inc.

Wi-LAN also said Friday it has settled a dispute with the Marvell Semiconductor Inc., a subsidiary of Marvell Technology Group Ltd.

Wi-LAN did not disclose details of the settlement.
