U.S. actor George Clooney has been released from police custody. He and fellow activists - including Clooney's father Nick - who were arrested this morning at a protest outside the Sudanese embassy in Washington, D.C., were set free from their shared jail cell after paying a fine.

Speaking to reporters afterward, the actor said, "You never know if you are accomplishing anything. ... We hope it helps." He added that there is a "ticking clock" on the current situation in the Nuba Mountains region of Sudan, where villagers have been under threat from government forces, and are in serious need of food and medical aid.

11: 54 a.m. Actor George Clooney and his father Nick were arrested today during a protest outside Sudan's embassy in Washington, D.C.

Just two days ago, the younger Clooney had testified before U.S. Congress about efforts by the regime of Sudanese president Omar Bashir to mount a "campaign of murder" against the people living in the Nuba Mountains region, along the border with the newly independent country of South Sudan.

Also arrested in this morning's protest were Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran of Virginia and NAACP President Ben Jealous. They had been warned three times not to cross a police line outside the embassy.

In his testimony before Congress yesterday, Clooney - who had just returned from a visit to the region - accused the Bashir regime of not only blocking badly needed food and medical supplies to people in the Nuba Mountains, but of actively bombing villages. "It is a campaign of murder and fear and displacement and starvation," Clooney told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday.

Today's protest was organized in part by Amnesty International, which is calling on its Twiiter followers to promote the hashtag #freeclooney and #SudanProtest.

Here is the video Clooney made while in Sudan, which he showed to members of Congress.
