The Daily Show’s Samantha Bee Explains How They Cover Rob Ford
submit to reddit

Daily Show comedian and satirical reporter Samantha Bee explained to George how her program covers controversial Toronto Mayor Rob Ford.

"When he made his first confession [about having smoked crack cocaine] and it was so outrageous and funny and weird for everybody in the office, everybody was like, 'Whaaattt? In Canada? You have freaks, too?'" said Bee. "So everyone was glued to the television and we were laughing and we did a thing on the show that night. And then after that it was quiet because Jon, honestly, I think, didn't want to go down in that direction. This person is troubled, this person is honestly going through something, I don't want to be the person who continually takes shots at someone who's on the downward trajectory."

Those concerns quickly evaporated.

"And then he went on television and talked about his wife's vagina," said Bee. "And then everything changed."

Samantha Bee will be defending Cockroach by Rawi Hage in CBC's Canada Reads competition. Her interview with George airs Monday, December 16, 2013 at 7 and 11:30 pm on CBC.
