Laurence Fishburne Talks About Being Mistaken For Samuel L. Jackson

Entertainment sites were aflutter this week after KTLA reporter Sam Rubin committed an embarrassing faux pas while interviewing actor Samuel L. Jackson — he confused Jackson with fellow actor Laurence Fishburne.

Jackson gave Rubin an on-air roasting over the mix-up, but as it turns out, this sort of thing has happened before.

Indeed, in an April 2013 interview on George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight, Fishburne said people have been mixing up the two actors for two decades.

Fishburne told George about one such incident which he dealt with very differently than Jackson did... he played along.

"I was doing an interview in New York almost 20 years ago," Fishburne told George. "A woman from Texas came up and interrupted the interview, 'I don't mean to bother you, but can I have your autograph Mr. Jackson?'

"And so I wrote blah, blah, blah, Sam Jackson. So Sam and I have this running gag about it. Once upon a time people used to confuse Al Pacino and Dustin Hoffman... it's not a bad problem to have."

Fishburne and Jackson's careers have overlapped in other ways. Fishburne says Jackson's part as Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction was originally written for him.

"I think [Quentin Tarantino] wrote Jules with me in mind," said Fishburne. "But I didn't really respond to the script and so Sam wanted to do it... and he just crushes it."
