All My Puny Sorrows author Miriam Toews was in the red chair to talk with George about the novel — and the real-life stories that inspired it.
George asked her about assisted suicide, one of the main themes of the novel.
"It's a really complex issue. The whole notion of pain, and how every individual experiences pain is up for debate.
"We don't know how another person experiences pain, physical pain or psychic pain. Some of these clinics where assisted suicide or euthanasia is practiced, they call it 'weariness of life.'
"It's difficult, if you haven't been there, if you haven't witnessed it first-hand. It's a very difficult concept to get your brain around."
