LeVar Burton's roles in Roots and Star Trek: The Next Generation have made him famous, but the 57-year-old actor may have had his biggest cultural impact as as the host of children's literacy program Reading Rainbow.
When Burton was in the red chair to speak with George about Reading Rainbow's new app for kids, he explained why he wanted to instill a passion for learning in his young viewers.
"I believe that the most powerful entity in creation is a lifelong learner," said Burton. "If you are literate in at least one language no one can pull the wool over your eyes. You have an opportunity to learn at your own speed all of the wonders that exist out there in the world.
"And so a literate human being is essential."
