Standup comedian Eddie Izzard is planning to make a big change in his career: Izzard has now officially confirmed that he will enter the 2020 race. Last year Ed Miliband, leader of the Labour party in the U.K., endorsed Izzard as his top choice for mayor, according to a report in the London Evening Standard.
Izzard sat down with George recently and talked about his intention to leave comedy for politics and enter the race to become mayor of London, U.K. in 2020.
While he was in the red chair, Izzard talked about his decision to run, and discussed some of Canada's mayors who have been in the news lately. He also mentioned Al Franken, another comedian who made the leap from comedy to politics, and shared a possible slogan for his political run. Look out for the full interview Wednesday, October 9 at 7pm on CBC.
In this clip, Eddie talks about...
His plans to run
George: Are you still planning on running for the mayor of London?
Eddie: Yep. (Crowd applauds) Hang on, hang on — what's that based on? Well done, well done. I could be terrible.
GS: You could be a terrible mayor.
EI: I could be like some of your mayors. You've got a whole mayor thing going on. I've just heard stories about Toronto and Montreal, that's all I've heard, and the rest of your mayors are fantastic, yes?
GS: Yeah, we have some good mayors in this country.
The comedian turned politician who inspires him
EI: I'm trying to do an Al Franken — if people in Canada know about Al Franken, who came from the world of comedy and went into being a senator of Minnesota and has really just got his head down and got on with it, and is up for reelection in two years' time. I want to bring all the energy of doing gigs in different languages, of touring around and playing lots of crazy places, of doing marathon running, of all this stuff, I'm going to bring that energy into it and hopefully do something positive. I can think in a different way, I can see things in a slightly different light.
