Take a hike, Google. Later Yahoo! Sorry Bing. There's a new search engine revving up down the street, and it's powered by one of the most successful recording artists of the early 1990s: M.C. Hammer.
At the annual Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco yesterday, the man who popularized Hammer pants pitched a search engine called WireDoo. The startup's tagline? "Search once and see what's related." Hammer elaborated by saying the engine would not actually be positioned to compete with the giants of search, but rather, would attempt to create a deeper searching experience by offering users results that expand on their initial query.
A Washington Post blogger imagined that this loose service description might mean: "If I searched on WireDoo for 'U Can't Touch This,' I might find links to the song, M.C. Hammer's bio, where to buy parachute-style Hammer pants and information about a 'U Can't Touch This' dance party that's happening in my neighborhood."
WireDoo, which has been in development for two years, is still in pre-Beta at the moment, but curious clickers can visit the company's site and sign up to be notified when it's ready for testing.
Although we've had some fun with Hammer here, we suspect he'd be a good sport about it, as evidenced by one charmingly self-deprecating comment during his presentation: "No one is playing for singles anymore." Not even him.
And who knows? The internet is a strange place. Perhaps one day, dozens of years from now, children will swipe their way through teaching clouds at their holo-school and learn about the pioneers who made their world possible; people like Gates, and Jobs, and Zuckerberg, and Hammer.
