A Russian daredevil and extreme sports star has set an almost unbelievable world record.

Valery Rozov has carried out the world's highest base jump, leaping off the north face of Mount Everest - the world's tallest mountain.

He did it to mark the 60th anniversary of the first successful ascent of Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary. He and his Sherpa Tenzing Norgay reached the summit on this day in 1953.

Rozov, 48, jumped from a height of 7,220 metres (23,687 feet) above sea level. He spent more than two years preparing for the jump, and developing a special new Wingsuit.

It took Rozov four days to climb to the jumping off point. He spent nearly three weeks in the Himalayas before the jump, along with four sherpas, photographers and a camera crew.

After falling for a few seconds, he glided for almost a minute - going as fast as 200km an hour (125mph) before landing safely on the Rongbuk glacier.

The Telegraph describes Rozov as "a superstar in Base jumping, an extreme sport which involves jumping from cliffs, bridges, buildings and towers."

Over the past several years, he's jumped into an active volcano in eastern Russia, off a mountain in Antarctica in temperatures of minus 30C, and off Shiving - a 6,543m mountain in the Indian Himalayas.

He's also a two time World Champion skydiver.
