Baby Sea Lion Climbs Onto Boat For Some Snuggle Time

Well, you don't exactly see this every day.

J.R. Gilkinson of California was sailing off the coast of Newport Beach with his niece and some friends, when along came a baby sea lion.

Next thing ya know, the sea lion climbs on the boat and gradually gets comfortable enough that it snuggles up to Gilkinson and lays on his lap for an hour.

"It was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had," Gilkinson told The Huffington Post. "I appreciated every second because I didn't know how long it was going to last."

Of course, experts don't advise people to approach sea lions but in this case, Gilkinson said "it was completely on the sea lion's terms."

"He wanted to come rest on me," he said. "So we let him."

And apparently, the pup was in no hurry to leave. Gilkinson said he had to stand up and nudge the sea lion back into the water.

Baby sea lions are being seen more often in Southern California getting unusually close to people.

Marine centers and rescue organizations say they're seeing more and more pups coming ashore - perhaps because there isn't as much prey for them at sea.
