King Abdullah Likes Star Trek More Than You Do

One Star Trek fan is about to put his money where his mouth is. King Abdullah of Jordan, a serious Trekkie who actually appeared in an episode of Star Trek: Voyager 15 years ago, plans to spend $1.5 billion building a Star Trek theme park in the country he rules.

The park will be called the "Red Sea Astrarium," with grounds spanning 184 acres of land in Jordan's only port city, Aqaba. The plans were announced by Rubicon Group Holding (RGH), which says the park is scheduled to open in 2014, with features including "technologically advanced attractions, five-star accommodation, [and] captivating theatrical productions."

It's not just a destination for sci-fi fans, either. The park will be powered by renewable green energy, and will include a centre informing visitors about the importance and benefits of eco-friendly practices. Apparently, since a similar venue in Las Vegas is now closed, the Astrarium will be the only place of its kind, where fans can...boldly go. Sorry.
