TIFF Replaces Movie Previews With Short Film About 9/11

Audiences watching movies at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11th weren't treated to the usual trailers before the features. Instead, they saw a short film about 9/11 and what it meant to attendees at the 26th Annual Festival, ten years before. That Festival was thrown into chaos by the events of September 11, 2001.

Lucius Dechausay, a video producer on our show, created the short. It was commissioned by TIFF, and features stock footage, archival material from TIFF's film reference library and interviews with people who were at the Festival ten years ago on the day of the attacks.

One focus of the short is how watching films helped many of the attendees at the 2001 Festival to deal with the horror of the attacks, and begin the long healing process. Appropriately, the working title for the piece was "Solace in the Dark."

Lucius found his interview subjects wanted to talk about their experiences on September 11. He says, "they really opened themselves up" and shared honest memories and stories of how they felt and what they did on that day.
