Celebrating ‘White Riot’: The Clash & 35 Influential Debut Singles

"Are you taking over? Or are you taking orders? Are you going backwards? Or are you going forwards?"

It's been 35 years since the Clash first released 'White Riot', the song that contained those powerful words. The tune was inspired by the 1976 Notting Hill riots. Clash members Joe Strummer, Paul Simonon, and their manager Bernie Rhodes were at the riots protesting against the police.

'White Riot' remained one of their signature songs throughout the Clash's career. It kicked off a run of powerful music, anti-establishment sentiment, and cultural influence that is still felt today.

To honour the anniversary of 'White Riot,' we've pulled together thirty five first singles that helped shape the musical and cultural landscape. These are all songs that started something big:
