Alexander Pylyshenko loves his lions. The zookeeper and owner of a private zoo in the town of Vasylivka in western Ukraine plans to live in an enclosure with a breeding pair of the animals for the next five weeks.
The female lion, Katya, is expected to give birth at some point during Pylyshenko's stay, which might make her extremely over-protective of her young, and potentially dangerous. Still, the 40-year-old zookeeper is convinced he'll be safe with the animals, having spent his life studying lions.
While he's in the cage, he'll eat when the lions eat, avoid using any shampoo, deodorants, shower gels or anything else with an odor that might offend the lions, and sleep on the same wooden floorboards as the lions do. He's also planning to paint pictures of them, which he intends to sell to raise proceeds for charity.
