The Heart of Auschwitz
May 2, 2011
submit to reddit

Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah). To mark it, we're highlighting a powerful movie worth checking out...

'Heart of Auschwitz' tells the story of a heart shaped book about the size of a butterfly. It was given to a Polish woman named Fania Feiner by her fellow prisoners. Feiner hid the gift from Nazi guards inside the camp, and ultimately survived Auschwitz.

She brought the book to Canada, and eventually donated it to the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre. Inside the book are birthday wishes from a small group of women, who were slave labourers together inside the camp. It was 1944, and the women were unsure they would survive or celebrate any birthdays ever again.

The film traces the book's history and takes you on a remarkable journey around the world to find the women who signed it. It's being screened in Toronto on May 8, 2011 7:45pm at the Bloor Cinema.

Here's the trailer...
