Tonight in the red chair: Dr. Cornel West, a professor and public intellectual whose resume also includes a couple of great movie cameos. West has appeared as Councillor West in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, and also voiced his character in the video game Enter the Matrix). Turns out, his foray into acting isn't entirely unprecedented. Academics have been popping up in movies and television shows for decades. Sometimes, as in West's case, they have memorable speaking roles; other times they're just there for blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameos. In the gallery above, we've rounded up some of our favourite intellectuals on screen (in fiction, of course — documentaries would take a much longer list).

To watch George's interview with Dr. Cornel West, tune in to CBC tonight at 7 p.m and 12:30 a.m.
