SOAPBOX: Adria Vasil On Why Earth Hour Is Still Essential
March 31, 2012
submit to reddit

Tonight at 8:30 p.m. the lights will go out - or at least they SHOULD go out, in order to celebrate Earth Hour, an annual event in which people around the world turn off all non-essential lights for an hour as a call to action on climate change.

Since starting in Australia in 2007, Earth Hour has been celebrated by millions of people around the world. But it has also been criticized, accused of being everything from a merely token gesture to a liberal plot - some conservatives have gone so far as to call for a "Human Achievement Hour", at the same time as Earth Hour, during which participants will turn on all available lights.

Author, columnist and environmental expert Adria Vasil has heard it all before, and she dropped by to explain why Earth Hour is still an essential action:

Adria's new book, Ecoholic Body, will be in stores everywhere on April 17 ... but we managed to snag an advance copy!

Here's George and associate producer Sarah Hoida with a sneak peek at the follow-up to Adria's popular Ecoholic and Ecoholic Home:
