Are you familiar with Tim DeChristopher? If not, let me refresh your memory. He's an activist with a passion for the environment. Back in 2008, he pulled a stunt that is now legendary in activist circles. To display the speculative (some would say predatory) way that oil markets are run, he started bidding on oil and gas leases as though he were an investor. His actions actually started a bidding war that drove up prices by millions, and threw markets into chaos.
Did he make his point? Oh yeah. Was it illegal? Oh yeah. He's now been convicted of making fake oil and gas drilling bids. The price? He could be looking at 10 years in prison.
Now, he does have some heavy hitters on his side, like Robert Redford. They argue that Tim's actions were political and expose glaring flaws in the system. Nevertheless, Tim's sentencing hearing is on June 23rd, so if his supporters can do anything to sway the judge, now would be the time. Check out Tim's story here.
