Latte Art: Who Would You Like In Your Coffee?
April 7, 2013

Some coffee shops will "personalize" your drink by writing your name on the side of the cup. Very nice. But wouldn't it be a lot more exciting to get a custom, hand-painted portrait in your latte?

These works of latte art were created by barista Mike Breach, who describes himself as an "espressionist" - because really, you can't pass up that pun.

He uses a bamboo skewer to create each piece, drawing dark espresso onto a milky canvas to produce these temporary portraits.

Breach is proof that boredom can lead to inspiration (seriously - an education expert recently suggested that parents should let their kids get bored for just that reason).

When he was left alone with an espresso machine for hours on end at the hotel where he worked, Breach discovered he could create art in the latte foam.

At first, he made random faces, but as he refined his art, he discovered he could pull off portraits of recognizable figures from history, art and pop culture (including 'Robocop', of course).

Apparently, Breach wasn't even a visual artist before his latte hobby got started. But as you can see, he's pretty skilled.

Although it's intricate and impressive, each piece only lasts about three minutes before dissolving. You can see lots more cups of caffeinated inspiration at Breach's Tumblr, baristart.tumblr.com.

And if you'd like to ask him to make you a warm cup of portraiture, he currently works at Smile To Go, a coffee shop in NYC. If you're down there and in the mood for a coffee with personality, the shop is at 22 Howard Street - you can check out the Smile To Go website for more info.
