Mark Twain once said that "age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter."
Well, in some ways, that sentiment is at the heart of a compelling set of photos done by American photographer Tom Hussey.
Hussey recently told NPR this collection was inspired by a friend of his father's named Gardner, who was a veteran of the Second World War.
Hussey says Gardner was about 75 or 80, but said he felt like he just got back from the war.
Gardner said "I should be in my 20s - and then, I look in the mirror and see this face I don't recognize."
So, Hussey put together a series of photos including one with Gardner himself, that you can see here.
Hussey says "the images evoke a reaction from every person, in pretty much any culture... everybody has a moment in their life when they think that's how they are."
And here are some other good quotes about aging.
"True terror is to wake up one morning and discover that your high school class is running the country."
"Old age, believe me, is a good and pleasant thing. It is true you are gently shouldered off the stage, but then you are given such a comfortable front stall as spectator."
"I think your whole life shows in your face and you should be proud of that."
"You can live to be a hundred if you give up all the things that make you want to live to be a hundred."
"He who is of a calm and happy nature will hardly feel the pressure of age, but to him who is of an opposite disposition, youth and age are equally a burden."
