If It’s Not Scottish It’s ... Canadian? Danny Bhoy Discovers Our Comedy Connections
March 10, 2012

Scotland-born comedian Danny Bhoy just wrapped up a trek through the Maritimes, and as he prepares to take his act across the rest of this country, he has good news to report: Canadians can handle Scottish humour.

"It just seems to me, when I do shows here or in Scotland, I don't need to change that much," he told Luis-Enrique Arrazola of Postmedia News. "Although you're neighbours, I find Canadian audiences are closer to English humour than American humour.

And Bhoy has had some experience when it comes to adapting to different comic sensibilities in different parts of the world. The Indo-Scottish performer told Arrazola that a crowd he faced in Mumbai, India, offered a particular challenge, for no other reason than they had never seen a standup comedian before:

"It was amazing, because, over the course of 75 minutes or 80 minutes, I just watched an audience sort of waken up toward what standup comedy was, and really get into it," he said.

So what did that first-time comedy audience see? Here's Danny Bhoy at Montreal's Just For Laughs festival in 2007:

And on home turf, at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival in 2010:
