Hundreds Attend Ottawa Pipeline Protest; Dozens Arrested
September 26, 2011
submit to reddit

Today in Ottawa, hundreds of people converged on Parliament Hill for a peaceful sit-in protest against the $7 billion Keystone XL pipeline project. Dozens were arrested for taking part in a stunt designed to do just that; news-making protestors lined up to make orderly attempts to jump a short metal fence with the stated goal of gaining access to the House of Commons to spread their message.

The civil disobedience, inspired by similar protests in Washington, D.C. at the end of August, was organized by more than 20 environmental and concerned organizations, and coordinated through Ottawa Action. Celebrity supporters of the cause include Gordon Pinsent, Graham Greene, Nia Vardalos as well as author-activists Maude Barlow and Naomi Klein.
