How Many Countries Are There In The World? The Answer Might Surprise You
October 26, 2013

It can't be that hard to figure out how many countries there are in the world, can it? After all, there are lots of world maps out there, so surely someone could just... Count?

Well, not really, according to the latest clip from educational video maker C.G.P. Grey. For one thing, he explains, estimates of how many countries there are in the world vary quite a bit.

According to the U.S. State Department, there are 195 countries in the world. The International Olympic Committee says 204 "countries" participated at the 2012 Games. And the United Nations only counts 193 countries as members.

But beyond different institutions' methods of totalling up countries, there are various issues that make settling on a definitive number pretty much impossible, many of which Grey breaks down in the video above.
