Homeless Girl Graduates High School As Valedictorian

As the school year wraps up, we came across this wonderful story about perseverance and overcoming adversity.

If you haven't seen it, it's about a 17-year-old girl, Chelsea Fearce, who spent much of her high school life living in homeless shelters with her family.

And yet, she graduated with honours and as valedictorian of her class at Charles Drew High School just outside Atlanta.

At times, Chelsea, her mom and her four siblings had an apartment. But her mom got laid off several times, so they'd end up back in a shelter, and even had to live out of their car (when they had one).

"I know I have been made stronger. I was homeless. My family slept on mats on the floor and we were lucky if we got more than one full meal a day," she said in her graduation speech (which you can watch at the top).

"Getting a shower, food and clean clothes was an everyday struggle."

Studying wasn't easy either, as Chelsea had to use the light from her cellphone to study after lights out at the shelter.

"I just told myself to keep working, because the future will not be like this anymore," she told WSBTV.

"You're worried about your home life and then worried at school. Worry about being a little hungry sometimes, go hungry sometimes. You just have to deal with it. You eat what you can, when you can."

Chelsea graduated with a 4.466 grade point average, scored 1900 on her SATs and tested high enough to take college classes mid way through high school. She starts college next year, where she plans to study biology, pre-med.

Here's a report from WSBTV.
