Dutch director Eddy Terstall tried to crowdsource his latest short film project, Deal, through a Netherlands-based version of Kickstarter, but when that didn't raise the €20,000 (~$28,000) budget required, he turned to an even tinier micro-source of financing: Twitter.
Terstall let his more than 4,000 followers know that, for a small fee, he'd make personalized mini-movies - which he dubbed TwitFlicks - for their Facebook walls. With plots based on his micro-patrons' Tweets, €10 ($14) bought a 10-second original film, while €60 ($84) purchased a short that'd be at least a minute long.
His entrepreneurial story was picked up in national Dutch press, and Terstall eventually raised not only the initial €20,000 he was hoping for, but a very impressive €120,000 (~$168,000) -- enough to expand Deal from a short into a feature length film.
