Bob Dylan Plays China
April 6, 2011

History has been made in China today, as the legendary rebel icon Bob Dylan played his first concert there.

Yep, the man with some of the most famous politically-inspired protest songs of all time is playing in China - a country famous for crushing protest.

Just the other day, China arrested one of its most famous dissidents - artist Ai Weiwei. In fact, human rights groups say the Chinese government is cracking down on free speech right now, in a way they haven't seen in years. And yet, China's culture ministry gave the go ahead for Dylan to play.

Today, he performed in Beijing. Friday, he plays Shanghai and next week, he has two shows in Hong Kong. There is a catch though. Dylan has had to agree to perform songs that are "approved" by Chinese authorities - which means his songs are being vetted by censors.

So, this might not end up being a huge force for change. But still, the fact that Dylan is actually performing in China is pretty remarkable...
