Something From Nothing: A Hip Hop History Lesson From Ice-T
April 13, 2012
submit to reddit

Ice-T is already known as a rapper, singer, actor and reality-TV star, but he can now make a new addition to his CV: film director.

T's directorial debut, "Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap", screened for the first time at the Sundance Film Festival in January, where it was picked up by Indomina Films. It's now set for an American release in June, with hopefully a Canadian one soon to follow.

The trailer for the movie, however, has just been released, and anyone interested in the history of hip-hop will want to check it out: The film is a love letter to the genre, featuring an assortment of T's musical comrades (many of whom are now in middle age) looking to celebrate the legacy of rap music.

The cast is a who's who of rap history (including T himself, of course), coming together to tell the story of a musical genre from the perspective of those who helped develop it. It's an admittedly triumphant version of the tale, befitting a movie that features some of the biggest names in the business.
