Dave Brubeck, an American jazz pianist and bandleader of the popular Dave Brubeck Quartet, has died at 91.

Brubeck was known for writing songs in unusual time signatures that still reached a broad audience.

To give you an idea of just how popular Brubeck was, his 'Time Out' album peaked at number two on the Billboard pop album charts back in 1959. Not too many instrumental jazz albums are doing that these days.

Brubeck was also a soundtrack composer - he wrote the music for 'This Is America, Charlie Brown' and 'Mr. Broadway', but Brubeck was not a fan of being labeled as any particular type of musician.

"For as long as I've been playing jazz, people have been trying to pigeonhole me," he told the Chicago Tribune. "Frankly, labels bore me."

In 2008, Condoleeza Rice presented Brubeck with a "Benjamin Franklin Award for Public Diplomacy" for offering a "vision of hope, opportunity and freedom" through his music. He was also inducted in the California Hall of Fame that year.

He's also been awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree by both the Berklee College of Music and The George Washington University, and he was given the Miles Davis Award at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 2010.

Brubeck is survived by his wife Iola, his four sons and one daughter, and several grandchildren.

Here are a few of his compositions:

'In Your Own Sweet Way'

'Take Five'

'Blue Rondo A La Turk'

'The Duke' (TV Performance)
