Patti Smith On Love And Loss

Rock icon Patti Smith talks about her intimate, transcendent photographs on display at the AGO... and how she feels the many people she's loved and lost in her lifetime are with her, always - from Fred Smith, Robert Mapplethorpe, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, to her brother Todd Smith... then George makes a surprising confession to Patti that makes her blush.

In this clip, Patti talks about...

Her exhibit "Camera Solo" & how she remembers her loved ones:

GS: "There's a real... there's a lot of death that's a part of this exhibit and a lot of the stuff that you've done, but it doesn't feel like it's about death in a way. It's like you've got this collection of stuff connected to other peoples' death."

PS: "Well, I think it's because so many people I love have died. I mean, I've lost in four years, four of the most important men in my life. And after my father and my mother, I've lost so many people that I've loved. And also so attached to great artists who were dead before I was born, and friends of mine like Allen Ginsberg or William Burroughs... so many people. And I keep them close at hand. I don't think of all of these people - I know physically they aren't here - but they're a part of my daily life....So I don't think of these things as relics of the dead. They're part of the life of people that I cherish and still walk with."

George's confession that he often says that Patti Smith is his girlfriend:

GS: "... when people ask me in interviews, "Who's your girlfriend?" I say "Patti Smith." So that's sorta how it goes."

PS: "That's fine with me (giggling and blushing)."

GS: "However - well, listen, I have to be truthful, right? Everybody at home knows it, so you might as well know it." (laughter)
