Dolly is highly recognizable for her signature style: the blonde hair, the dresses, the larger-than-life look. She tells George how the whole thing came about. For our special Holiday edition of George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight, George takes his red chairs to New York City for an intimate sit down with Dolly Parton.
Catch the full interview tomorrow, December 24, on George Tonight at 7 pm on CBC.
Dolly's new book is called 'Dream More', and it's in stores now. And her Imagination Library benefits children of her home county in East Tennessee by mailing high quality, age appropriate-books directly to their homes.
In this clip, Dolly talks about...
How her look came about
I like myself and I like the way I look and I pattern myself... after the town tramp, but that's a girl's idea of glamour, because I wanted to have my hair blonder, I was a blonde kid but that was dishwater blond and I wanted radiant blond.. I used poke berries for lipstick when I was a kid and burnt matches to make my eyebrows and beauty marks and all that.
I'm not a natural beauty and I have to make the most of what I've got and how I dress and what I wear is how I feel most comfortable and that's when I do my best work. If I'm comfortable with me, people are comfortable with me even though they can say 'God, can you imagine wearing that all day and night' but I understand all that.
