This is one of those videos that's both charming and poignant. The fact is, kids in this country are spending too much free time watching TV, surfing the internet or playing video games.
According to a 2012 report from Active Healthy Kids Canada, kids in Grade 6 to 12 spend 7 hours and 48 minutes each day on screens. You know how much is recommended? No more than two hours.
A few other stats for you - 46 per cent of kids are getting three hours or less of active play each week - including weekends.
And at lunch and after school, kids are getting only 24 minutes of physical activity. It's recommended they get at least 60 minutes every day.
This video makes the point in a really entertaining way. It was put together by several third year students at the Bezalel Academy of the Arts in Jerusalem.
A mom does her best to deal with her son, who's addicted to video games.
So, how do you get your kids outside more? Well, here are a few ideas from the folks at ParticipAction:
- Make family time active time, such as an after-dinner walk or bike ride.
- Head to the park to kick the ball around or shoot some hoops.
- Get your kids to help do yardwork, or while you're outside doing that, they can be playing at the same time.
- Don't 'overstructure' everything; just let the kids play, run around and be kids.
