If you're into animation then you know that we are living in an era of some pretty great stuff... the Adult Swim gods have created some modern masterpieces. So if you're into the new shizz and haven't really connected to its roots, this is for you... Chuck Jones, the master animator, screenwriter, producer and director who created Wile E. Coyote, the Road Runner and Pepe LePew, would have turned 99 today (he died in 2002).
Unlike modern animated shows, Merrie Melodies were more than cartoons ... they didn't talk down to kids. They connected them with satire, smart humour, and classical music. And they were full of references to great works of literature, which is one reason they're every bit as important and enjoyable to watch today as they were when they first aired.
Three of the best shorts Chuck ever directed are Rabbit Fire, Rabbit Seasoning and Duck! Rabbit, Duck! They star Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Elmer Fudd (there's an elephant in there somewhere, too). It's never been this much fun to watch a duck, a rabbit and a hunter argue about who the hunter should shoot.
