A good friend of the show, K'naan, is working on a book to tell his life story. But this isn't your standard autobiography. K'naan is writing his book for kids aged 7 to 10.
It'll be called 'When I Get Older: The Story behind Wavin' Flag,' and is due out in late September. It'll be 32 pages, with illustrations by artist Rudy Gutierrez and sheet music for 'Wavin' Flag' - the theme song of the FIFA 2010 World Cup.
K'naan was born in Somalia, but left with his family in the early 90's to escape the civil war. Eventually, they settled in Toronto.
The book will look at the challenges he faced in a new country and how music became a way to connect with his past.
In a statement, K'naan said "I think of empathy as a muscle in the soul, which develops through the nutrition we provide for it. The stories we hear as children can be that nutrition."
"I wanted to write a children's story that reflects the new immigrant's sense of family and identity, which can sometimes be lost in translation. In this book, the main character is Wavin' Flag, a song whose ownership has been long claimed by children all over the world."
K'naan has been on the show a couple of times. Here's the conversation he had with George, as Wavin' Flag was exploding around the world.
And last year, he wrote a moving piece in the New York Times about returning to Somalia for the first time in 20 years. You can read the full piece here.
