Last week, we brought you up to speed on this year's Nobel literature awards buzz, reporting that Canada's revered Alice Munro had been given 12-1 odds of taking home the win by British bookmakers. Earlier today, the shortlist for the 2013 Man Booker Prize was announced, and once again, there's a Canadian in the running: Whaletown, B.C.'s Ruth Ozeki.

Ladbrokes, the British bookmaking site, put the odds of Ozeki's A Tale for the Time Being taking home the $81,000 purse at 5-1, landing her in fourth place out of six. Ozeki was born in United States, and became a Canadian citizen in 2005. A Tale for the Time Being tells the story of a woman who discovers a washed-up Hello Kitty lunchbox on a beach in B.C's Desolation Sound, and gradually gets drawn into the story she finds in a diary inside.

The Man Booker Prize is awarded each year to the best English-language novel published by an author in the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland. This year's shortlist also includes Eleanor Catton, who was born in London, Ontario but raised in New Zealand. Ladbrokes offered 4-1 odds that her book, The Luminaries, would take the prize. The other nominees are: England's Jim Crace (5-2) for Harvest, Ireland's Colm Tóibín (7-2) for The Testament of Mary, Zimbabwe's NoViolet Bulawayo (6-1) for We Need New Names and Indian-American author Jhumpa Lahiri (6-1) for The Lowland.
