Russell Banks on Turning Novels into Movies

Author Russell Banks talks about the process of adapting his acclaimed novels for the big screen. Right now he's working with Genie Award-winning, Canadian director Denis Villeneuve on the film adaptation of 'The Darling', and the project is set to star Jessica Chastain.

He's in the red chair tonight, along with musician Alan Doyle.

On the process of 'adapting' a novel for the screen:
"You can't see a film adaptation of a novel as anyway a translation. I don't even like the work 'adaptation'. It's just 'pillaging' is what it is. You're going in there and pulling out of the novel the pieces that will make a good movie - and they may not be the pieces that made it a good novel!"
