They just don't make school library posters like they used to. But luckily for us, a librarian at Vernon Barford Junior High School in Edmonton has uncovered a treasure trove of vintage posters for us to enjoy. Joelle Enokson, the librarian who posted the images on Flickr, believes the posters were purchased "when our school was first built in the mid 1960s".

So what did library posters communicate back then? There's a lot of focus on what books can offer, from romance (in the form of a fencing match), to access to the "Atomic Age", to that authentic tough-guy boxing pose we all associate with book-lovers. There are also some nautical metaphors, a couple of hilarious animals, and a truly bizarre image of a detective standing next to a girl tied up in a chair. All in all, it seems like the school library of the mid-60s was an exciting place to be.
