SOMETHING YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT CANADA: Nanook of the North

Atom Egoyan recalls the movie considered by many to be the first documentary, a film made in Canada's north by director Robert Flaherty in 1922 called "Nanook of the North."

But was it really a documentary? There was the little matter of the disappearance of Flaherty's original footage in a fire, a situation that called for some creative intervention ...

Atom Egoyan is one of Canada's most famous filmmakers, but has made a return to his theatrical roots with a staging of "Cruel and Tender" at the Bluma Appel Theatre in Toronto, which runs until February 18.
