December 27, 2012

The internet is a goldmine (and yes, sometimes a cesspool) of viral videos. And 2012 produced a whole bunch that were clever, hilarious, and/or touching.

From dancing books to gay guys with designs on your girlfriend, here are our top five favourite viral videos of the year. Follow the links for more info.

Dear America: Support Gay Marriage Or These Gay Guys Will Marry Your Girlfriends!

Be aware: there's a little swearing in the vid. Potentially NSFW.

As the well-dressed men in this video point out, there are still many opponents of gay marriage in the U.S. And if the many arguments for making it legal across the country won't work, maybe threats will.

In this video from College Humor, they make the greatest threat of all: they will marry your girlfriend. And if you think that's just a joke, maybe watch the video first. They make a compelling argument that they could do it. Check out the back story here.

Baby To Teenager In Two Minutes

If you've ever looked at a baby picture of yourself and wondered how the adult you could be the same person as the little one in the image, you should watch this video.

Filmmaker Frans Hofmeester filmed his daughter Lotte every week for 12 years. He cut it into this timelapse video, showing in minutes what the process of going from an infant to a pre-teen looks like. Watching the change is an intense experience.

British Maxipad Company Apologizes For Years Of False Advertising With A Brilliant Video

Sometimes a complaint against a company goes viral online (remember 'United Breaks Guitars'?). Well, this British maxipad company decided to respond to a viral (and completely unserious) complaint from a customer who accused them of false advertising with the video above.

And wow, did it work out well. It's a brilliant way to show that the company is in on the joke - which is that most maxipad adverts aren't exactly truthful. Check out the whole story right here.

Henri The Existential Cat Does Not Like Halloween

Henri the Existential Cat returned in 2012 to bemoan the "banal symbols" and "meaningless decorations" of Halloween. As with his previous three videos, this one combines an excellent understanding of cat psychology with a hilarious send-up of existentialist misery.

The story of how Henri first became the star of these videos is pretty interesting, too. Check it out.

The Bookstore After Hours

Type bookstore in Toronto is pretty normal during the day. But at night... This timelapse video of books coming to life and doing a little dance was made over "many sleepless nights," according to the filmmaker, Sean Ohlenkamp.

All the work was worth it. The video is a stunning piece of work, and it's got nearly 3.5 million views so far. Read more about it here.
