They Got The Goat! Sweden’s Gävle Goat Has Burned Down
December 13, 2012

Bad news for fans of the Gävle Goat or Gävelbocken, the large straw sculpture that is erected each year in Gävle, Sweden: arsonists got to the goat just before midnight on Wednesday.

The straw structure was completely burned by the time emergency services arrived. On the plus side, there were no injuries as a result of the blaze (except for the goat, obviously).

Police have opened an investigation into vandalism over the destruction of the goat - CCTV footage shows three or four potential suspects prowling around the goat before it went up in flames.

The really surprising thing? Firefighters had doused the goat with water earlier in the evening. They say it should have frozen, making it very difficult to burn the structure down.

But apparently, the arsonists found a way.

At this point, it's become a tradition for people to try and burn the goat down. This is the 29th time they've succeeded since the first goat went up in 1966.

"Personally, I think this is a shame," Gävle police duty officer Johan Fredrisson told the TT News Agency. "It's fun that the goat is so famous but it would also be nice if it could be left alone."

As for the Gävlebocken itself, it seems resigned to its fate. Here's the goat's final Tweet for the year:
