The World’s First Hovercraft Golf Cart & The Actual Story Behind It
April 5, 2013
submit to reddit

When it comes to golf, there are generally two types of people - those who love it and those who hate it. Either you can't get enough or you find the game deathly boring.

Well, this could make a lot of the haters think twice.

Professional PGA golfer and 2012 Masters Champion Bubba Watson has teamed up with one of his sponsors to create the BW1, the world's first hovercraft golf cart.

This thing looks pretty awesome - it glides over grass, cruises through water hazards and barely leaves any footprint on the course or the greens.

The video at the top, which came out this week, shows Watson cruising the fairways of Arizona's Raven Golf Club.

So far, the cart is just a prototype - it'll be several months before it's ready to hit the market. But the manufacturer says it's already received interest.

But as Fortune points out, "once the novelty wears off, the real questions have to be asked: What's the noise level? Is it run by gas or electric? Would an older member have a difficult time getting in? How well does it scale a steep incline? What are the operational costs? What storage space is needed?"

All of this started out as just a marketing idea to promote Watson, as the sponsor
doesn't have any background in golf carts.

But the video took off online, with more than 3 million views. And now as Businessweek writes, the company "has to decide if it really wants to get into the hovercraft business."

You can read the full Businessweek piece here.

Plus, Fortune has a feature article about the hovercraft and the marketing strategy behind it. You can read it right here.

Watson, by the way, isn't your stereotypical reserved pro golfer.

In 2011, he and three other pros formed the PGA's exclusive boy band The Golf Boys and a made video that went viral. Here it is.
