The Beatles said it best: we get by with a little help from our friends, and these two dogs prove it.

Lily is a Great Dane who lost both of her eyes six years ago to an incurable condition that was causing her eyelashes to grow into her eyeballs.

But when she lost her sight, Lily also gained a friend and helper: Maddison, another Great Dane, became Lily's guide dog.

Like a human's guide dog, Maddison helped Lily safely find her way.

"If they are out and about, for the majority of the time Maddison will lead and Lily will walk nearly touching her so she knows where to go," said Louise Cabell, the manager of the Shrewsbury Dogs Trust where the pair used to live.

"It's lovely to watch. Maddison is very thoughtful and always looking out for her."

The two dogs also spent most of their time together when they were not on the move - apparently they curled up and slept together at night.

Unfortunately, the story doesn't end so happily. Although they were close for many years, Lily and Maddison had to be separated late last year after Lily started attacking Maddison.

Dog trainers were unable to return the pair to their former friendship, and the decision was made to place them in different homes.

The two are both living happy lives, but they have been separated, according to the BBC.
