The woman in this video has one of those "once in a lifetime" moments - she free dives with a huge great white shark.

Her name is Kimi Werner. She's from Hawaii and has a passion for painting, cooking and the natural world.

In this video from Patagonia's 'Variables' series, Kimi talks about finding her place in the ecosystem, and tells the story behind the time she went free-diving with a great white shark.

With no cage and no scuba tank, she reaches out and holds on to its dorsal fin. The experience is part of an overall philosophy that Kimi tries to live by.

She writes on her website about growing up Hawaii saying...

"I realized that those days of learning to live simply off of the land and ocean were the happiest moments of my life. I missed the underwater world and I missed the simple lifestyle that I had left behind.

So I set out to re-learn how to freedive, spear fish and live a happier, more sustainable life. I fell into the hands of great teachers who taught me to dive and spearfish on a whole new level. With their help, I found exactly what I was looking for and my life instantly felt so much more complete."
