Britain Is Considering Launching A Negative Ad Campaign To Trash Its Own Image; Here Are Some Sugges

Chances are, no matter where you go in the world, people have national pride.

They love their country, because it's home. And they want the world to know about the wonderful things their country has to offer.

Well, get this.

Government ministers in Britain are considering launching a negative advertising campaign about... Britain.

Well, it's part of a plan to persuade potential immigrants to stay away from the UK - specifically people from Bulgaria and Romania.

Bulgaria and Romania are the two newest members of the European Union. Right now, there are restrictions on their ability to live and work in the UK.

But those restrictions expire next year, and Britain is concerned about a huge influx of immigrants from Bulgaria and Romania.

Campaign groups such as MigrationWatch estimate that 250,000 people will come from both countries over the next five years.

Experts, however, suggest that number is too high because it's based on the number of people from Poland and the Czech Republic who moved to Britain in 2004.

At that time, only three countries would let them in. This time, all 25 EU states will open their borders.

Others point out that Romanians traditionally have closer ties to Germany and Italy - not Britain.

Still, some British ministers are concerned and want to start a campaign that would focus on the bad side of life in the UK - apparently, with an emphasis on the weather.

One report quoted a minister as saying the campaign would "correct the impression that the streets here are paved with gold".

There's no word on how far officials would go with this kind of campaign or how negative it would be.

But the Guardian asked its readers to send in ideas for the campaign. Here are some of them, including the one at the top of the page.

British cabinet ministers are considering other measures as well, such as making it tougher for immigrants to access public services.

Another idea is to deport those who move to Britain but who don't find work within three months.
