Name: "Trouble"
Age: 20
Trouble started her Camsite 8 months ago as a way to boost her self-esteem. She'd just gone through a bad breakup and says, "The attention from strangers really seemed to help me think of myself as beautiful, and learning all the html and coding definitely helped pass the time as a new hobby." She's been learning how to design websites since she was 13 so starting up her Camsite went fairly smoothly.
Sexy pics
Trouble has a small link on her Camsite to a "harmless" porn site run by a friend who she models for. Trouble says in the pictures she has on her site, she isn't showing or doing anything "that I wouldn't do in front of my own mother."
Trouble says she's worn lipstick and held a cigarette on camera for money and shown her feet and chewed gum for extra attention. She explains that looks are very important in the Cam community and says Cam girls spend a lot of time planning their 'look' on camera. She says it's all a careful illusion.
Running her site
Trouble runs about 50 per cent of her site herself. She hires writers to write in her weblog, as well as to update and manage the content of her main pages. She pays for the domain name and hosting herself; it's about $10 a month. Sometimes she gets help with HTML and layout from other Cam girls or guys.
Creeps and stalkers
Trouble says she gets a lot of "suggestive and demeaning" e-mails asking her to get naked on her cam. She says this is common even though many Cam people operate their sites mainly to showcase their art and poetry or write in their weblog.
Trouble says she just blocks the messages, ignores the e-mails and continues on.
Trouble has met a few people in the "real" world who have recognised her from her site. She says they're mostly harmless - but that she did receive a scary e-mail from someone who knew the type of car she drove, her license plate number, what she was wearing on a certain day and where she works.
"I was incredibly creeped out but instead of panicking I simply wrote him back saying how he sounded like a nice guy but that I didn't appreciate his efforts. I never heard back from him, but I am a lot more careful about how much personal information I post nowadays."
The Cam community
Trouble says there is definitely a Cam community and it can be very much like high school. People start cliques and promote different styles and looks on sites. Links to your Camsite are signs of friendship, as are offers from people to host your site for you.
Trouble gives the example of linking herself to McHottieJo's site, which is more popular. Trouble hopes Jo will return the favour and help her to up her popularity. Trouble says she doesn't care that much about her links and who hits her site but says some Cam Girls and Guys are pretty obsessed with finding out who their fans are.
Trouble says some Cam people make a business out of their looks and make thousands of dollars from their links to porn sites and from gifts.
"It is a big, silly vicious cycle with rewards and praises matched with degradation and embarrassment but we all love it and it would take a lot to drag any of us girls away from our sites."
