Tips for would-be Toronto rockers

While Toronto does have a great music scene and lots of venues, Street Cents found there are a few things you should do before grabbing your CD and heading for the bright lights.

  • start out playing shows in smaller towns and cities and get a following before you come to Toronto. This proves to venues that you're serious and that you can draw a crowd.
  • if you still can't get a gig in Toronto - do it yourself - rent a community hall and charge what you want
  • it's hard to make it anywhere - not just Toronto - but don't let other people's attitudes stop you - keep trying
  • concert venues and promoters get hundreds of CDs from bands. Follow up on yours. Keep the pressure on and eventually someone will notice your drive and give you a chance.
  • gaining experience with a company like Supernova may help - it gets you on stage and gets your music out there (and Sum 41 first got noticed at a Supernova show)
  • volunteer at all ages shows (hanging posters, collecting money at the door, move equipment) - this will get you known at those shows and may open doors for your own band
  • If there's a band that you love, ask if you can open for them next time they're in town. It's a way to play for a new crowd and a chance for club owners to see you.
  • try out other Battle of the Bands conerts if you don't like Supernova's (like Bandwars in Guelph, Ontario.)
